A Message To All Associates

As we continue to work through the coronavirus event, we want each of you to know that nothing is more important to us than the safety and well being of our associates and your families. Each of you should know that we are taking all of the necessary steps to ensure safe environments throughout our system. Altec has a management task force team monitoring the situation on a minute-by-minute basis and they are tracking information being shared by public health agencies along with the best practices being shared among our suppliers, customers and peer manufacturers.

We recognize the hardships that these circumstances have created for everyone. Many Altec associates have been asked to work remotely in response to the recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control to help slow the spread of COVID-19. We understand that some of you may have a sense of isolation as public health officials ask that we distance ourselves from others. While you work remotely in continued support of our customers, we encourage you to stay connected with Altec teammates and co-workers as well as your loved ones. Other associates, due to your roles and responsibilities, have been asked to continue to work on-site which has allowed us to keep our operations running to continue to serve our customers. In many instances, you have been asked to flex hours, adjust your work conditions and maintain social distancing. Again, all of this is being asked of you in an effort to minimize the spread of the virus. We greatly appreciate everyone’s flexibility and understanding as we continue to implement these recommended guidelines to keep associates safe.

Altec will continue to monitor this ever-changing situation and we thank you — our dedicated team members — for your vigilance and your efforts to keep yourselves and those around you safe. In addition, we deeply appreciate your on-going commitment to serve and support our customers, for whom the livelihoods of all of us depend.

At Altec, we remain convinced and confident that this crisis will pass, our nation will remain resilient and our company will emerge stronger and more successful. Thank you for all you do for Team Altec!

Lee, Jon and Mark Styslinger

Track-Mounted Borer for  Tight Access &  Rough Terrain

The  DB41B is a track-mounted pole borer that provides easy access to confined work areas. Built to serve the electrical utility and telecom markets, the DB41B provides best-in-class lifting and digging capacities, while also delivering multi-functioning speed and performance. The unit can easily set and service poles up to 16 m and lift up to 2,720 kg. The unit also has continuous rotation and an unlimited work zone.

With its ability to drive on front-to-back and side-to-side slopes of up to 15 degrees, the DB41B can traverse a variety of terrains. The track carrier has retractable tracks, which can reduce the minimum width of the unit to less than 90 cm to allow easy passage through pedestrian gates and tight spaces.

As with all Altec Pole Borers, the DB41B is engineered and tested to ensure it is built to last. The DB41B comes standard with Altec’s Load Moment and Area Protection (LMAP) safety feature, which keeps the unit’s operations within the limits of the load chart. If the maximum load capacity is reached, the machine locks out, and a horn and red LED light engages to notify anyone in the vicinity of the machine that it is overloaded.

The DB41B also provides the following features:

  • 49.6 hp petrol engine
  • Hydraulic tilting pole guides
  • Maximum pick capacity of 2,720 kg
  • Full-function radio controls for driving the track carrier
  • Hydraulic side load protection (HSLP) during borer operation
  • Ground pressure below 7 psi
  • 86 cm x 121 cm cargo deck with a 1,065 kg capacity to help haul equipment and transformers
  • Australian standards compliant control system which interlocks when running the unit from the platform
  • Optional jib winch that offers 450 kg material handling at any position

For more information on the DB41B and other Altec equipment, call 1300 1 ALTEC or contact an Altec representative online.

In addition, the membership further facilitates discussions with vegetation management experts, a critical component of Altec’s product development process. The Altec Rebuild Process

Australian law dictates that Elevated Work Platforms (EWPs) and pole borers must be rebuilt once the equipment is ten years old and every five years after that. Altec conducts rebuilds on all brands and models of EWPs and pole borers. If the unit is not built by Altec, we work with the original manufacturer to source genuine OEM parts. Altec adopts a custom approach for new unit builds, and the same is true of the Altec rebuild process. We understand that each customer has different requirements, and we adjust our service to accommodate each of their needs.

A thorough rebuild process improves crew and operator safety, which is why our experienced team goes the extra mile to ensure the unit performs at its best. After conducting a detailed visual inspection of the unit to note all apparent areas requiring repair, our service team performs a dielectric test to establish a baseline for the unit.

Next, the unit is stripped and undergoes a thorough inspection of all parts and components. This inspection includes an acoustic test to ascertain the structural integrity of the unit. Following the acoustic test, the Altec team provides a comprehensive list of all elements that need to be repaired, refurbished, or replaced. Altec’s rebuild team works with each customer to advise them on the next steps to meet their business objectives while maximising value and highlighting safety.

When the scope of the rebuild work is agreed upon, various elements of the unit are repainted, fibreglass work is completed, and all critical components are refurbished or replaced. The Altec rebuild team does not stop at just the EWP or pole borer but ensures that all additional elements on the truck are in top shape. This includes checking that all lockers function correctly, and all accessories, such as cable holders, are cleaned and in working condition. The cleaning and refurbishment element is the most time-consuming element of the rebuild process and requires acute attention to detail.

Then, the team reassembles the unit, taking as much care as with new builds. The team understands the nuances of different equipment brands and models and adjusts their approach to suit the characteristics of the EWP or pole borer. Altec has excellent relationships with OEM companies and can provide customers with the peace of mind that all the latest updates have been made to the unit.

After being reassembled, all units undergo further testing, such as stability and dielectric, which are carried out by independent inspectors. This way, the customer is ensured that the rebuilt unit is properly certified and will continue to serve them faithfully.

Once the unit is back in the field, Altec provides future support as needed. The Altec team provides part sourcing services, unit servicing, inspections, and testing throughout Australia.

10 Reasons Renting from Altec Can Benefit Your Business

Renting equipment can be a cost-effective way for businesses to obtain the equipment they need without a long-term financial commitment. This allows them to maintain capital and take on profitable projects.

Selecting a company to rent from is just as, if not more, important than choosing the equipment required for the job. For instance, if a job requires an elevated work platform, renters can select from various brands of equipment, but it’s important to consider multiple factors when dealing with a rental company.

With the Altec Australia team fully behind the rental process, there are major benefits to renting with Altec. Below are 10 reasons renting from Altec can benefit your business or fleet.

  1. Rental Process

The process of renting equipment from Altec can be simplified into just a few steps. Our sales team will discuss your equipment needs to help identify the best Altec unit to help you complete your work. After identifying the unit, we’ll discuss rates and payment terms, draft a hire contract, deliver the truck, and put the truck in service whereby our team walks you through its safe operation. Before the contract ends, you can return the truck to Altec, or we can have a service technician pick up the truck from you.

  1. One Point of Contact

When you rent from Altec, you deal exclusively with Altec. This includes everything from selecting the equipment to returning the equipment. If you need service, help with a technical question, or require training during your rental term, Altec will be there to assist you.

  1. Low Age Profile

Altec keeps newer equipment in its rental fleet, which mitigates liability for our customers and ensures compliance with the latest Australian safety standards. We take pride in our equipment and focus on procuring the newest chassis and maintaining a clean and comfortable cab.

  1. Quality and Testing

Each completed Altec unit is built from start to finish by Altec without outsourcing any of the manufacturing to other companies. As a manufacturer of products that are designed to lift workers off the ground, safety is a top priority at Altec. Altec only delivers products after they have undergone stringent testing that exceeds industry standard requirements. Altec will never forgo time or cost for the sake of safety.

  1. Service Footprint

Altec Australia’s facility outside of Melbourne in Dandenong, Victoria offers service and maintenance. Altec also has a large service network with 2-3 service partners in every major city in Australia. If one of our partners isn’t available to perform service when you need it, Altec has a team of mobile service technicians that can be dispatched directly to your location.

  1. Bespoke Equipment

When you rent from Altec, you don’t just pick from a lot of equipment. Altec can custom build a unit to your exact specification, including a specific body and chassis configuration.

  1. No Hidden Fees

With Altec, you won’t be surprised by hidden fees. Damage waivers and excessive usage penalties are not charged to our customers, and services such as in-service unit training are standard with the delivery of all Altec rental units.

  1. Rental Term Options

Altec does not have a standard rental agreement. Whether you need equipment for a short-term or long-term project, Altec can customise a hire lease for you.

  1. Rent-to-Own

Altec offers a rent-to-own option for customers who want to use our equipment and evaluate its technology before committing to a purchase. Our rent to own program provides you flexibility when dealing with capital budgets, which can be helpful if unexpected equipment needs arise and budget dollars have already been allocated.

  1. Built by Us

Renting Altec equipment from Altec affords you many competitive advantages. Because we built the equipment, our team has the product and industry knowledge to advise you on equipment options and hire lease terms. With the most comprehensive rental range of EWPs and crane borers for the municipal, vegetation management, contractor, telecoms, and electric utility industries, Altec equipment meets all Australian regulatory requirements and is delivered with mandated safety equipment.

Flexible Solutions in a Dynamic Industry

The Australian utilities sector is more dynamic than ever. While constant change might be great fodder for newspaper and magazine articles, it can be a headache for market operators. In this article, we explore some of the most poignant market trends and understand how Altec – insulated EWP, crane borer, and specialty equipment manufacturer – is helping companies address these challenges.

In efforts to reduce the cost of electricity, the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has announced two cost-saving measures that will impact utility company operations. The first is reducing the rate-of-return regulation. Utilities are challenged to balance the requirement for ongoing infrastructure investment with the need to recoup investments. As a result, rental demand has increased, and Altec’s diversified fleet has proven to be an excellent alternative for many customers.

The AER’s second measure emphasises extending the longevity of equipment with more rebuilds as opposed to selling equipment at a certain age. For some customers, the cost of rebuilds is difficult to justify when the rebuild certification is only valid for five years. Altec’s long-term rental options with competitive rates offer customers an alternative solution.

Altec has taken further steps to offer clients peace of mind and cost-effective solutions in challenging times. In response to the requirement to keep line mechanics and arborists safe and ensure there is no unit overloading, Altec has introduced a new safety feature for the Australian market – a platform load management system and material handling. These standard features on the Altec TA55 significantly reduce the risk of overloading the unit and safeguard from objects falling from the bucket.

Altec is also pleased to announce the introduction of the AT37P, a new unit featuring a two-man bucket that will soon be added to the rental fleet. Suitable for street lighting, power line, and vegetation management work, the AT37P is a versatile unit that allows flexibility in different work applications. Altec’s rental fleet includes EWPs ranging from 10 – 26 metres and crane borers with hook heights up to 15 metres and winch capacities up to 13 tonnes.

Altec’s rental fleet offers clients flexibility, cost efficiency, and the opportunity to test the industry’s newest innovations. For more information on rental solutions with Altec, call 1 300 1ALTEC or contact an Altec representative online.
